The objective of Digital Girl of the Year™ Award is to bring recognition to one girl* per age subcategory noted below who distinguishes herself and her community by demonstrating, promoting or actually increasing:
- Digital skills among girls and women;
- Participation of girls and women in digital studies and careers; and/or
- Use of digital skills and know-how for the benefit of society.
Entries for the 2019-20 Digital Girl of the Year™ Awards, must be submitted in one of the following subcategories to qualify.
Subcategory 1) 10 years and younger: The award in this Subcategory is destined for a girl*, age 10 or younger, who captures the theme “Girls in the Digital Future” with a message and in a medium – though not necessarily digital – that best addresses the objective of the Digital Girl of the Year Award.
Subcategory 2) 11-to-14 years old: The award in this Subcategory is destined for a girl*, age 11-to-14, whose submission in any digital medium best addresses the objective of the Digital Girl of the Year Award.
Subcategory 3) 15-to-17 years old: The award in this Subcategory is destined for a girl*, age 15-to-17, whose submission in any digital medium best addresses the objective of the Digital Girl of the Year Award.
*anyone who identifies as a girl
Participants must be the age noted in the noted Subcategories as of 20 September 2019.
Entry and Judging Criteria:
Entrants must meet the following criteria to qualify:
- Be the parent or legal guardian of the nominee
- The nominee is a girl, or someone who identifies as a girl, in the appropriate age category
- The nominee is resident in the EU or CIP country – full list below
- Complete all aspects of your nomination on the submission form per the Category
- Video submission must meet the 3 minute video limit
- Print contributions for Subcategory 1 are sent in digitally for judging (these can be posted on a blog or website of your choice)
- Music contributions can be no more than 4 minutes in duration
- All pre-produced material such as music must be approved for use or license free, or creative commons licensed
- Not have previously been awarded a winning prize in any Ada Awards category or region
- Not be an employed by any organisations partnering with the Ada Awards, nor a family member of those employees
- Entry must demonstrate innovative use of the medium
- Entry for Subcategory 1 must address the theme – “Girls in the Digital Future”
- Entry must meet the 3 minute video limit / 4 minute music limit
- Entries can be submitted in any language but you must provide an English language translation/ subtitles in English, for judging
- Any entries that are deemed to be offensive or culturally insensitive will be disqualified
- The competition organisers reserve the right to decide on the eligibility of candidates and entries

The aim of the Ada Awards™ – including Digital Girl of the Year™, Digital Woman of the Year™, and Digital Impact of the Year™ – is to showcase outstanding women and girls in digitally-enabled and digitally-driven studies and careers, and recognise organisations that are fundamentally improving the eco-system to increase participation of girls and women in digital studies and careers. - Increase the number of digitally-skilled girls and women;
- Increase participation of girls and women in digitally-driven and digitally-enabled studies, enterprises and jobs;
- Recognise outstanding women and girls in digitally-enabled and digitally-driven studies and careers; and
- Showcase promising practices by organisations who are increasing participation of girls and women, particularly in leadership roles, in digital sectors.

Entrants retain the copyright of their materials and entries. However by entering the competition, the entrants authorise the Digital Leadership Institute asbl/vzw, its Partners and Awards Sponsors to unlimited reproduction rights of the materials for the purposes of promotion of the competition, prize giving and awards ceremonies.
Entries may be created in all eligible country languages. It is mandatory to provide the registration form fields in English. This summary is important for the European jury members to evaluate projects, but also for those viewing competition entries.
Legal and Ethical Issues
The Digital Leadership Institute asbl/vzw, its Partners and Awards Sponsors reserve the right to modify the terms, conditions and content of the competition at any time including but not limited to the prizes, age groups, deadlines and sponsors. Any notifications or possible changes will be published on the website and will apply as of the date of publication.
Before submission, special attention should be given to the following points: All participants must comply with European and national copyright laws.
- Entries may not contain statements, facts, information or quotations that could denigrate or harm any person or group of people; neither statements, images facts, information or quotations encouraging persecution of people on the grounds of race, opinion, nationality, sex, religion, profession or other persuasion, nor entries encouraging crime or law-breaking will be allowed.
- All persons photographed or filmed for the purposes of the Awards have given their, or a parent’s in the case of minors, consent for publication.
Please note that an entry may be disqualified if it breaks any of the rules under “Legal and ethical issues”.
